During the third week of the fourteen-day shutdown to flatten the curve, I was sitting in my place of business. I was not allowed to open because I was not deemed by the government to be essential. I was only allowed to do paperwork, stock shelves, clean things and other such tasks that did not involve contact with customers. People often called me and asked if I was open. I never said that I was open, but would say, "I am here." Some people took the hint and shopped at my business. During the third and fourth weeks of those fourteen days, I had a lot of time to think. I started to wonder if there would be a fifth and sixth week of this madness. I started to wonder what would happen if it never ends. What if every thing and everybody was deemed to be nonessential? What would happen if every human on Earth ended up either dead or locked up in a quarantine and computers kept us fed? Once the world was as bad as I could imagine it, I began to write about recovery from such a world.
I sat in my business writing between customers. Several months passed while I was still working on it. Several things that I predicted as part of fiction, such as the election of Joe Biden, actually came true. I pray that more of those predictions do not come true, but then again maybe it would be good if they happened. We end up in a good place eventually.
I am in the process of writing a follow up book, so keep an eye out for it.
